CInSt research seminars continue in the new academic year 2020/2021
Traditional CInSt research seminars start in a new academic year in online format, which means that they are now available to an even wider audience!Sergey Popov, CInSt leading research fellow and lecturer in economics at Cardiff Business School, will present a paper "Arithmetics of Research Specialization" on the first research semiar of the new 2020/2021 academic year.
We model the use of research specialization in hiring as a signal of ability. We demonstrate that rewarding for specialization can make an average non-specializing candidate on average better than an average specializing candidate, and vice versa. Specialization works as a good ability signal only when both good and bad candidates are very likely to churn out good projects. However, a "tenure-track’’ contract helps rationalize the penalty for no specialization.
