Workshop “Economics of Education: Human Capital, Networks and Labor-market Outcomes”

Center for Institutional Studies HSE held the workshop “Economics of Education: Human Capital, Networks and Labor-market Outcomes” (October, 23-24th).

The aim of the seminar was to introduce the recent findings in educational economics and perspective areas in this field. Current workshop featured research projects that cover topics of effects of cognitive skills, networks and migration on life achievements, school outcomes and wages in light of economics sciences.

Our guests were scholars from Higher school of Economics, Warwick University, and Brown University. Postdoctoral research fellow Yannay Spitzer, Brown University, presented his recent work “The Dynamics of Mass Migration: Estimating the Effect of Income Differences on Migration in a Dynamic Model of Discrete Choice with Diffusion” in which he analyzed migration from East Europe to USA in late 19th yearly 20th century. The work introduced a Dynamic model of migration.

Prof. Victor Lavy, Warwick University and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, made a talk about the effects of social networks on academic achievements and behavior. He showed that reciprocal friends and followers in class positively influence test scores in English, Math, and Hebrew.

Oleg Poldin, Associated professor at NRU HSE, discussed his work “Which Peers Matter: How Social Ties Affect Peer-group Effects in University Education”. Sergiy Polyachenko, Junior research fellow at NRU HSE, presented his ongoing work on determinants of cognitive skills and competences. Finally, Maxim Bryukhanov, Junior research fellow at NRU HSE, presented the work “Female Educational and Labor Market Outcomes: Further Evidences from RLMS”.
