The workshop is an introduction to the use of networks in economics and aims to show the students the diversity of questions studied with the help of social interactions and network analysis. I will describe examples from different fields to illustrate them.
First, I am introducing the peer effects in education, and providing some results from the existing literature. You will see, how the achievements of the friends may shape students’ own performance.
Second, the information spillovers in the networks will be discussed on the example of microfinance project in India. You will learn that detecting the key person in the network might be crucial for the faster spread of knowledge.
Third, I will show how the inclusion of social interactions in the analysis can improve and maybe even change the results on the example of local labor markets. The examples are chosen to come from different fields and to discuss different questions to provide a better overview of a broad nature of economics of networks. The methodology will be briefly described in each case, but no technical details will be present.
